'What do you use?' - Molly Silverman
‘What do you use?’ - the most common question I hear from clients who frequent my chair… and I understand it. Like most things in our lives there is an over abundance of information floating in cyber space on ‘the best’, ‘the most effective’, ‘the healthiest’ hair care products. You just want a simple answer, so I have done my best to get that for you. Through this series, I ask my colleagues, friends and hair idols… “What do you use?”.
Now we are not physicians or biochemists, but we all spend a lot of time with hair. You can decide the credibility…

Molly’s Haircare Routine - in her own words…
I shampoo my hair once maybe twice a week, otherwise I will just do a curl refresh, this involves spritzing my mid length and ends with water and working a cream or gel through the lengths of my hair and let it air dry. If I have extra time, sometimes I’ll make my own refresher spray at home with fresh herbs and essential oils. My favorite product to do a curl refresh with is the Curls Lavish Curls Daily Moisturizer, it has aloe and glycerin in it which really hydrates my waves nicely and preps them for styling. It gives my hair some definition and light hold but it doesn’t look like there’s any product in my hair.
On my ‘wash days’ I do my full proper curl styling routine. I like to use a sudsing shampoo, I went through a phase where I avoided sudsing shampoos like the plague but then I felt like my scalp wasn’t getting good exfoliation and my hair was limp from buildup, so now my wash days are less frequent but I’ll use something that really lathers up nicely. I alternate between the Davines OI Shampoo, and the Giovanni Tea Tree Shampoo, I get at my local health food store, it’s nothing special but it has a nice lather to it and the tea tree oil is really cooling on my scalp. I always do two shampoos, and then I follow up with a deep conditioner. Right now I’m using the Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask. I try to deep condition my hair once a week.
Since I have textured hair I only brush my hair in the shower when it’s soaking wet with lots of conditioner in it.
I see lots of curl content on IG and TikTok of people sectioning their hair and doing brush curls with a Denman brush and clipping their roots etc. and that’s cool, to each their own, but I try to be more of a ‘wash n’ go’ kind of gal because I like my hair when it looks a little wild and I think the whole purpose of embracing your natural texture is working with it and not against it if that makes sense.
I always start with a raking through a leave in conditioner after the shower, currently I am alternating between the Davines OI All In One Milk, and the L’Oréal Professional Pro Longer Cream.
Then I follow with a couple drops of the Olaplex Bonding Oil, also raked through my mid length and ends and then I layer on a strong hold gel. My favorite gel right now is the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lavender Mint Defining Gel. If I have time I’ll diffuse my hair with my Black Orchid Diffuser attachment, otherwise I just let it air dry. I let my styling gel form a cast over my curls/waves and when my hair is 100% dry I’ll go back in with a couple drops of oil, either the Davines OI Oil or the Olaplex Bonding Oil to scrunch out the cast or “scrunch out the crunch”
